We’ve all been there. You want to inject a little more fitness into your life and exercise more often, but you can’t seem to get the motivation up to start and, when you do, it’s hard finding the motivation to keep going. A workout is as much a mental exercise as it is a physical one. So, here, we’re going to look at the ways you can keep those motivation levels high, keep your mood positive, and keep your body moving.
Keep it fun
A lot of people do not associate the gym or regular fitness classes with fun. The idea that exercise is a hassle could be one of the things keeping you back in the first place. Find other ways to get active that you actually look forward to doing. They don’t necessarily have to be fitness or exercise classes, so long as they get you moving. Affordable salsa classes can get you moving, help you find a hobby, and develop a skill. Joining a team, whether it’s a tennis duo or an amateur football league, can keep you going through competition and the motivation of having others relying on you, while also getting you to play a game. If you find the fun in exercise, then the not-so-fun becomes much easier, too.
Hack your body
As well as being about how we think of exercise, motivation is also very much about how our body reacts to it. Rather, it’s about the physical changes in the brain. It’s supposed to release endorphin, which reduce our experience of pain as well as generally lifting our mood. There are a few ways to maximise that endorphin hit, too. For instance, music has been proven to help people exercise harder, for longer, without even noticing it. Make yourself a workout playlist that’s upbeat, fast-paced, and full of tunes you love. Another way to increase the endorphin hit is to exercise alongside a friend. Having someone working out with you not only makes you naturally exercise to match their pace, but it can help keep you accountable in the long run, too.
Remember why you’re doing it
You might start getting used to exercise, but you also want to make sure that you stick to it in the long run. For that reason, it’s a great idea to take a closer look at what your motivation actually is. We all want to be healthier, but it’s proven to be a lot more effective to identify specific fitness goals that you can use to track your progress along the way. Do you want to reach a certain goal weight? Do you want to be able to lift a certain amount? To run a half-minute mile? Find the goals that best fit your overall wants and track your progress towards them.
Not everyone is built to work out, without any hassle, regularly without a little help. The tips above are just some examples of you can stay motivated during your fitness kick. As you get used to it, it becomes easier to find that willpower naturally, so hang in there.
