We all know I’m no makeup guru. A part from my everday makeup I really don’t branch out. However, I do love a red lip makeup look come winter time. It’s one of my favourite looks and is the only time I change things up really. Don’t be deceived, I’m still pretty crap at makeup. Also it’s a fab and versatile look – you can dress it up for your Christmas parties, or more casually for those Christmas shopping days or trips to the garden centre. So I thought I’d share my simple red lip makeup look and how I’d dress it up for the party season!
A good base is cardinal in the winter. Especially when you’re like me and go a nice shade of tomato. Also with combination skin I tend to get drier patches this time of year.
After prepping my skin with moisturiser and my holy grail Bobby Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base, I pop on the Collection pore minimiser primer. I know that’s 2 primers. But the Bobbi Brown one just preps your skin nicely. Whereas the Collection primer has a great matte effect primer which also has witch hazel in to help the skin. I then conceal (yes, I conceal before foundation but you do you), I use a combination of the Collection Lasting Perfection concealer and the Revolution Conceal and Define. I only pop this on any blemishes or red areas, you know the drill. For foundation I use a little bit of Rimmel Match Perfection mixed with the Garnier BB Cream to give my complexion a little more glow and colour. And then just a little more concealer under the eyes because you know, gotta cover the bags.
I then set it all with the Rimmel Stay Matte powder. Matte powders are always a life saver come this time of year. I then do a little bit of bronzing and contouring using my Iconic pallete to add a little colour to my face.
For a more casual day I’d do a natural but slightly smokey eye. Just with a collection of warm nude-y/brown tones. However to glam the look up a bit, of course you’ve got to add a little shimmer. How could you not this time of year. So I tend to do a similar smokey look, and for that I use the NYX Lid Lingerie pallette. And in the centre I pack on either a gold or champagne colour from the Maybelline blush nudes palette. I tend to go for gold as the warmer tones go really well with green/blue eyes (thanks for the tip, Pinterest) and I love the subtle glam look it gives.
I then tend to pop some eyeliner on, which currently is the Supercat liner by Soap and glory. I’m pretty naff at the whole cat eye but after about 50 attempts I do a subtle wing. If you want a subtle look you can use a kohl liner and smoke it out into the shadow. And then to finish of the eyes I apply the Benefit they’re real primer and then the lash sensational mascara. If you wanted a bigger eye look, feel free to add some false lashes – I love the Kiss Beauty lashes and the lashes in noir are my fave for party season. They’re the perfect balance of volume and length but aren’t overboard!
And now for the lips. Obviously in a red lip look, there isn’t too much that goes into the lip part. But I have a few favourite red lipsticks which I thought I’d share with you. Sometime I do start off with a lip liner to help the shape of my lips, and honestly the Primark liners are fab. They’re also only £1 so definitely check them out!
I then pop one of 2 lipsticks on. The first one being the NYX Liquid Suede in Cherry Skies. It’s quite a deeper red which is perfect for bolder looks. And is probably my personal fave. Mainly because I’m more of a liquid lipstick gal – I just think they’re super easy to apply and build. And the deep red suits my pale complexion without it looking too theatrical.
Secondly, a beauty guru classic – a Kate Moss lipstick. It was all about the 107 back in the day, but I now use the shade one. Which is very similar – a build-able berry red. It has really nice pinky undertones to make it more of a versatile lipstick so would be a good one for a more casual makeup look.
