Today marks the anniversary of the Rana Plaza inci Today marks the anniversary of the Rana Plaza incident, the fourth biggest industrial disaster in history. Which also makes today the first day of fashion revolution week.

On 24th April 2013, the Rana Plaza factory collapsed killing over 1000 people, and injuring many more. Thus, Fashion Revolution began and hosts a week of action on this tragic incidents anniversary to call for more transparency from big brands and ask the question #WhoMadeMyClothes

This year’s theme is rights, relationships and revolutions. Supply chain workers are still underpaid, overworked and unprotected by big fashion brands, especially since the pandemic hit, and sadly we are still seeing too many accounts of gender based violence, union busting, factory fires and much more. I’ve got a few more posts around this coming up, so will explain more then. But for now you can head over to @fash_rev to learn more. They also have a list of ways you can get involved such as:

• Ask your favourite brands #WhoMadeMyClothes and #WhoMadeMyFabric (print outs and resources are on the Fashion Revolution website)

• Email brands asking for more transparency within their supply chain

• Share & amplify the voices and grassroots doing the work

• Educate yourself - @fash_rev have some great events lined up which I’d recommend you join if you’re available! I also recommend following @ajabarber @aditimayer @zainab.slow.fashion and @ssustainably_

@hm the mighty greenwashers are back at it again. @hm the mighty greenwashers are back at it again. Appointing @maisie_williams as their new ambassador to push their ‘recycling revolution’.

There is no such thing as a recycling revolution.

In Europe each year, around 300,000 tonnes of clothing goes to landfill or is burnt each year, and only 1% of clothing is actually recycled into new clothing. And globally it is just 12% of material used for clothing ends up being recycled (BBC). And after a while, it will still end up in landfill.

Recycling is important, don’t get me wrong, however it is not the solution. Not at the rate clothing is produced. It would take 12 years to recycle what fast fashion companies make in 48 hours because of their rapid mass production process. (Claudia Marsales)

Recycled clothing does not make it sustainable. Especially since H&M is a fast fashion brand who continues to bring out thousands of new garments each week, mostly made out of virgin materials and excessive resources and are made by underpaid garment workers who still aren’t protected from gender based violence. Oh, and their CEO is worth $17.6 billion.

We do not need recycling schemes, ‘new technology’, ‘conscious points’, empty 2030 targets, or celebrity ‘ambassadors’ to push your greenwashing message. We need less garments being pushed out, living wages and protection for garment workers and to pass the mic (and money) to the grassroots who are doing the real work.
