SECOND HAND SEPTEMBER —
Today marks the beginning of @oxfamgb #secondhandseptember which puts light on the pressure fast fashion is putting on the planet and the people and encourages people to slow down consumption and shop second hand when possible.

It’s no secret that our consumption is too fast, and is only continuing to grow to levels the planet can not sustain. What was once 4 seasonal collections is now 52 and thousands of new items are being added every day. And around 13 million items of clothing end up in UK landfills each week (Oxfam).

Fashion should not be disposable, I have been shopping second hand for over a year now and (although I realise it’s a big privilege) I encourage anyone looking to set a new goal this autumn or detox your wardrobe a bit to take the pledge to shop second hand for the next month, you’ll be surprised what you’ll find! But of course, still only buy things you’ll wear for years to come, and the most sustainable clothes are the ones you already own🤍

Fun fact: there are more pairs of jeans on this planet than humans. And this number is continuing to grow with 300+ million new pairs being made each year. It also takes 7,000 litres of water to produce just one pair of jeans, as well as polluting the waters with harmful chemicals and dyes.

I wear jeans a lot all throughout the year, and currently buy most of mine second hand. Charity shops & vintage shops always have a selection of jeans, although I understand there may not always be the best range of sizes. So if you’re looking for sustainable jeans I’d recommend checking out @mudjeans @boyishjeans and @mihjeans and if this isn’t in your price range, consider these things:

• Extending the life of denim by 9 months can reduce water & carbon footprint by 25-30%.

• Look for materials such as hemp, which is a great alternative and uses 55% less water.

• Look got certified organic fibres or recycled materials.

WHERE TO DONATE CLOTHES —
A large part of creating a sustainable fashion industry is responsible disposal when the item is no longer worn or wanted. In the UK alone, 430,000 tonnes of clothes are thrown away each year. That’s around £140 million worth of clothing, much of which I’m sure is very wearable. So to avoid landfill and keep fashion circular, here are some great places to donate your clothes:

• CHARITY SHOPS - An obvious one, but a great one nonetheless. Most charity shops will have information online or in store regarding their donations.

• RE-FASHION - An online fashion marketplace selling second hand, quality women’s clothing. It’s so easy to use, just sign up and they’ll send you a bag which you just send off for free!

• MARKETPLACES - such as Facebook or NextDoor, a great way to keep it local and help people in your community out.

• LITTLE LIVES UK - A charity that supports children who are disabled or disadvantaged. The clothes will either be donated to families who are in need of them, sold in their charity shops which helps fund opportunities for children or sent to children in the global south.

• iCOLLECTCLOTHES - A free collection service which raises money for charities. For every tonne of clothes you donate, they will donate £200 to your chosen charity.

• CHOOSE LOVE - They have a number of drop off points, and the items donated will go to refugees in Calais and Greece. Due to Covid restrictions they cannot take donations over right now, however are still asking people to collect items for when they can. You can find a list of items they desperately need on their website.

• HOMELESS CHARITIES - Shelter and Crisis are two amazing charities to donate to, however there are also lots of local charities who will be collecting clothes (especially in the winter).

• PROM ALLY - Do you have a prom or occasion dress collecting dust in your wardrobe? Prom Ally are a great charity providing those who cannot afford prom dresses and suits so they don’t have to miss out.
