Ahh, the creativity block.
We’ve all been there. The burn out moment where you desperately want to grab your camera and take photos, maybe write a blog post or two. Wringing out your brain for inspiration. And yet there you are 9 episodes deep of Gilmore Girls telling yourself you’ll do something ‘after the next episode’. This was me all morning before writing this. And it’s stressful trying you find some inspiration and mojo and your mind is just being fuzzy. So I thought I’d share my ideas and personal ways of getting your creativity juices flowing once again…
STOP THINKING ABOUT IT AND THINK ABOUT YOU
First things first, stop stressing and even thinking about it all. The worst sort of content in my opinion is forced & false content. For the recipient and for yourself. People can tell when your heart was not truly in something you’ve created, and you won’t be 100% proud of it. And that’s more stressful than the creativity block in my opinion. So take a break and don’t worry about what looks Instagrammable, or your next blog post. And let it come back naturally. In the meantime, take photos because you want to. Not because it’d look good in your feed. And write because you enjoy writing, not to rank at the top of Google.
And look after yourself. Self-care is so important in this sort of industry and we can easily forget to take out time for ourselves. Have a pamper evening, go on a walk, heck go away on a week long retreat! Just find your feet again and figure out what you want to create again naturally.
A CHANGE OF SCENERY
Getting outside of your work bubble and out of the work mindset is a breath of fresh air. And is such a simple way of getting your mojo back. Go on a little walk, maybe pop to the coffee shop with a good book, pop your phone on do not disturb and take a moment to stimulate your brain. You’d be surprised how simple motions in your day can spark inspiration.
Likewise, going places is such an easy way of experimenting with creativity and finding inspiration. Even if it’s just to the coffee shop. I love popping into Oxford or even to the garden centre when I’m out of inspo and letting my juices flow again!
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO INSPIRE YOU
I love spreading the love on Instagram. But I stand by my ethics of only following people who, when I see them on my feed, I feel inspired. And I think to put yourself in the right mind space you first surround yourself with the right people. Equally, go meet a friend who makes you feel inspired. I love being around people who you just bounce off of and make you feel inspired and motivated. They’re some special sorts of people and a perfect way to keep you social as blogging can be a little lonely, and get your mojo back.
TRY SOMETHING NEW
Pop your bubble and step out of your comfort zone. Try something new, experiment with different styles and angles, even if it doesn’t work. You never know what will work or not work. Think collages, drawings, videography or cinemagraphs, editing styles or writing styles. Maybe even look outside your ‘niche’ and try something new, not even for the sake of content. Just try something new, because you never know.
